This is the second year that
we have experienced Victoria’s newest public holiday, Grand Final Friday, and a
number of traders believe that the potential for The Queen Vic Market to become
a key destination for footy fans was enhanced by this year’s events.
A quick survey amongst
traders produced a positive response to the buzz around the market on the day.
The attendance of footy fans, the events on Queen St. (pie eating competition),
the roving entertainment of musician Harry, and the regular announcements
throughout the day, all contributed to a feel good trading environment. Harry
reported a strong response from footy fans as he moved around the market.
Without accurate sales data
it is difficult to assess the impact on trader’s incomes. The feeling seemed to
be that business was ok but didn’t really live up to the potential of the crowd
or the positive trading environment.
But certainly this is an event
that deserves our support and making Grand Final Friday a Queen Vic Market Day
for Melburnians and visitors has taken another positive step.
