David
Jones have thrown down the gauntlet in the food retailing war as they claim the
high end of the category.
This week their
CEO described the big three, Coles,
Woolworths and Aldi as "racing for the bottom" while DJ's look to the
top of the prepared and fresh food market. David Jones have quite good
credentials in this category although the recent failure of upmarket Jones The
Grocer, and the reduction in Woolworths Thomas Dux outlets might be cause for
concern. The balance of quality freshness and innovative prepared foods is
their target. Prepared food is a growing category that is no stranger to food
shoppers at any of the supermarket chains.
The
interesting question for us is where does the Queen Victoria Market sit in all this?
